U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Ukraine should consider having someone other than President Volodymyr Zelenskyy negotiate an end to Russia’s war, intensifying a dispute between the two leaders over peace efforts, weapons and Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
“Maybe it’s time for Zelenskyy to get somebody else to negotiate,” Trump told reporters. A day earlier, he accused Zelenskyy of not wanting to end the war and criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian diesel refineries, which Trump said were hurting global fuel markets. Trump has defended delaying new sanctions on Moscow and a deal allowing Russian diesel exports, saying he wants to keep Russia engaged in negotiations.
Zelenskyy, who spoke Sunday with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, said Ukraine was prepared to work constructively toward ending the war. He proposed halting strikes on Russian diesel facilities in exchange for additional Patriot air-defense missiles.
Zelenskyy also accused Washington of delaying Patriot interceptors, restricting intelligence sharing and withholding some advance warnings of Russian attacks. He told U.S. senators Monday that recent American decisions were “hard to explain between friends.” The United States continues to share intelligence with Ukraine, Trump said.
The dispute unfolded as Russia and Ukraine continued attacks on each other’s energy sites. Zelenskyy said Russian strikes had left tens of thousands without electricity, while Ukraine carried out what The Hindu described as its largest drone attack on St. Petersburg since Russia’s 2022 invasion. Witkoff is expected to travel to Norway for another round of negotiations, according to Reuters reporting cited by Al Jazeera.
