Nigeria has confirmed an imported case of Ebola in Abuja, its first during the current outbreak spreading from the Democratic Republic of Congo to other African countries.

Health authorities said the patient is a woman who arrived from Uganda on October 3, developed symptoms on October 7 and sought care at a private hospital on October 11. Laboratory tests confirmed Ebola on October 20. She has been isolated and is receiving treatment.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said molecular testing identified the Bundibugyo strain, which is driving the outbreak in the DRC. The World Health Organization also confirmed the strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. An official at an emergency meeting described the patient as a diplomat, while The Punch reported that she is the wife of a diplomat.

Officials have identified 44 contacts and are monitoring them while seeking others who may have been exposed. Infection-control measures are being strengthened at the hospital where the patient was treated.

The outbreak began in the DRC in May and has caused more than 9,000 confirmed infections and over 4,300 deaths, according to health authorities. Uganda and Kenya have also reported cases. Uganda, which had been declared Ebola-free in August, has disputed suggestions that the woman contracted the virus there; Africa CDC said she had not travelled to the DRC.
