Ebola outbreak reaches Nigeria as Kenya reports more infections

Nigeria has confirmed its first case of Ebola in an outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May and has spread across several African countries.

Nigerian authorities said the patient, who had recently returned from Uganda, tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain and is receiving care in isolation. Officials are monitoring 44 contacts. Uganda has disputed Nigeria’s account of the case’s origin; the World Health Organization declared Uganda’s outbreak over on August 27.

Kenya confirmed its first imported case on October 6 after a Kenyan citizen who had lived in Congo travelled through Uganda to Nairobi and later died. Ghana’s Health Ministry said six additional linked cases, including infections among healthcare workers, had been reported in Kenya by October 17. France 24 subsequently reported that Kenya’s total had risen to nine.

Kenya has declared Ebola a formidable epidemic disease and introduced rules covering screening, isolation, quarantine, contact tracing and safe burials. As of October 12, the WHO said Kenya had listed 127 contacts, quarantined 94 and screened more than 665,000 travellers at entry points.

Ghana, which has reported no cases, has strengthened airport screening and surveillance because of travel links with Kenya and Nigeria.

Africa CDC said it would convene an extraordinary virtual meeting of national health officials on October 28. The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, and Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya has called for greater investment in vaccine research, clinical trials and African manufacturing.
