Nigeria has confirmed an imported case of Ebola in Abuja, extending an outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo into West Africa. The patient, a woman who recently traveled from Uganda, tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain on October 20 and is receiving care in isolation.

Nigerian authorities have identified 44 high-risk contacts and are tracing others who may have been exposed. Some contacts have been quarantined. Africa CDC said investigators are also examining a possible connection between the Nigerian patient and a case in Kenya because both traveled through Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport on October 3, but no link has been established.

The outbreak has caused more than 9,500 confirmed infections and about 4,600 deaths in the DRC, according to figures cited by Deutsche Welle and Premium Times. Kenya has also reported travel-linked cases. The World Health Organization described the outbreak as “complex” and advised countries in the region to maintain a high level of readiness. No approved vaccine or treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain, Deutsche Welle reported.

Africa CDC will convene an extraordinary virtual meeting of national health officials on October 28 to coordinate the response. Ghana has strengthened airport screening and traveler monitoring, while the United States is introducing certification requirements for foreign passengers concerning recent travel to the DRC. Africa CDC has appealed for additional funding, medical supplies and health workers.
