Nigeria has confirmed an imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja, while Kenya has reported a ninth infection linked to its first known cluster.
Nigeria’s patient began showing symptoms on October 7 and was admitted to a hospital four days later, according to the country’s health ministry. Authorities have identified 44 contacts and begun tracing them. Uganda’s health ministry said the woman had transited through Uganda after a business trip to eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, adding that the location of exposure remains under investigation and that Uganda has no confirmed active cases.
In Kenya, health authorities said the latest patient is a 24-year-old relative of the country’s first confirmed patient. He developed symptoms while quarantined and tested positive on October 19. The initial patient, a 40-year-old man who travelled from the DRC through Uganda, died in Nairobi on October 5.
All nine Kenyan infections belong to a single known cluster, and officials said there was no evidence of transmission beyond it. The eight surviving patients were stable and responding to supportive care. Authorities had traced 134 of 135 identified contacts and placed them in quarantine.
Kenya has increased screening for travellers from 10 countries but has not restricted travel, trade or public gatherings. Ghana, which has reported no cases, has strengthened airport surveillance, laboratory preparedness and training for health workers in response to the cases in Kenya and Nigeria.
