Senior Hamas officials warned that the group could carry out another attack resembling the October 7, 2023 assault, according to reports by Ynetnews and Yahoo.
Ynetnews reported that the warning was delivered during a meeting with U.N. humanitarian coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov in Gaza. The officials allegedly asked him to relay it to Israel, saying Hamas could strike inside Israel, in the West Bank or abroad if opportunities arose. According to the report, Alakbarov passed the message to Maj. Gen. Yoram Halevy, Israel’s coordinator of government activities in the territories, and Israeli officials forwarded a document about the threat to the country’s political and security leadership.
The report said Hamas linked its warning to Israeli military operations in Gaza, changes to the boundary marking Israeli military positions and the Palestinian Authority’s cancellation of elections. Ynetnews also reported that Hamas was under military and financial pressure and had been instructed by mediators and the Board of Peace to disarm.
Separately, The Times of Israel reported that Israel had provided the United States with intelligence indicating Hamas did not plan to disarm and was preparing for another war. Haaretz reported that an Israeli military assessment concluded Hamas could be dismantled only through renewed fighting in Gaza.
