Russia is sending its first tanker of diesel to the United States under a deal between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to reports from Reuters and several other outlets.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said the vessel would depart Thursday carrying 40,000 metric tons of fuel, The Hill reported, citing Reuters, Russia’s RIA news agency and other media. Novak said additional shipments would follow. Shipping data reviewed by Reuters showed the first cargo heading toward the United States, while Bloomberg reported that the vessel had signaled a U.S. port.
The shipment has drawn protests from Ukraine and political scrutiny in the United States. The Washington Post reported that Democrats plan to investigate U.S. diesel companies involved in easing sanctions on Russia.
Czech President Petr Pavel said Tuesday that Trump’s diesel agreement with Russia had derailed progress in negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. Pavel told the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network that the two sides had been “so close” to a ceasefire and that reaching one would now be more difficult. He said Russia was using the momentum to withdraw from the process.
