Ireland is preparing for Storm Boelo, the second named storm in quick succession, after Storm Austen left about 3,000 properties without power and disrupted bus services, according to The Irish Times.
Met Éireann issued orange warnings as Boelo was forecast to bring heavy rain and gale-force westerly winds, with severe gusts expected along western and northern coastal counties. An orange wind warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo was due to run from 2 p.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday, while RTÉ reported orange rain warnings for Galway and Kerry.
Forecasters warned of possible damage to weakened structures and power lines, further outages, fallen trees, large coastal waves, transport delays and difficult travel. Coastal flooding was also possible where winds blow onshore. The flooding risk is elevated because ground was already saturated by Storm Austen.
Events and transport were being affected ahead of Boelo’s arrival. The Galway Races rescheduled Saturday’s National Hunt meeting, and events in Kerry were cancelled.
Storm Austen, the first named storm of the 2026-27 season, had developed rapidly over the Atlantic under the influence of the jet stream. The Met Office had forecast widespread gusts of 50-60 mph across parts of southern Britain, with exposed coastal locations potentially exceeding 70 mph, before the system moved east into the North Sea.
