Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations, according to the White House and statements reported from both countries.
The White House said first lady Melania Trump and one of her representatives worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to negotiate the arrangement. Trump described Oleshky as a front-line city “on the brink of disaster,” with shortages of food, medicine and clean water, limited electricity, mined roads and regular attacks.
Under the plan, civilian representatives from Russia and Ukraine would assess residents’ needs, while people wishing to leave would receive transportation to destinations in either country. An unnamed American media organization would accompany teams on the ground to document the process, Trump’s office said.
The timing was not immediately clear. The White House said the truce would begin on October 29, while Russian officials said their forces would stop firing at 02:00 GMT on October 27. Ukrainian lawmaker Davyd Arakhamia said an operation to unblock Oleshky and nearby areas would begin soon but did not announce a date.
Oleshky, in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, has been under Russian occupation since the opening days of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Residents have reported severe food and medicine shortages, malnutrition and limited medical care. The duration of the ceasefire was not announced.
