Storm Boelo brings flood risk, severe winds and travel disruption to Ireland and UK

Storm Boelo began affecting Ireland on Saturday, bringing heavy rain and the prospect of severe winds shortly after Storm Austen caused power outages and left ground saturated.

Met Éireann placed Kerry and Galway under Status Orange rain warnings from 7am to 2pm. Orange wind warnings for Donegal, Leitrim, Galway, Mayo and Sligo take effect at 2pm and remain in force until 9am Sunday. Yellow rain and wind alerts also cover several western and northwestern counties.

Forecasters warned that further rainfall could cause rapid runoff, rising rivers and surface-water flooding, particularly in the west and southwest. Strong onshore winds combined with high tides could also cause wave overtopping and coastal flooding. Potential impacts include fallen trees, damage to power lines and buildings, transport delays and dangerous coastal conditions.

Ferry services were disrupted, with several Stena Line sailings between Dublin and Holyhead cancelled, along with an Irish Ferries crossing from Pembroke to Rosslare. Sporting events were also postponed or rescheduled.

In Northern Ireland, an amber warning covers Derry and Antrim from Saturday night into Sunday, while warnings extend across Scotland and northern England. The UK Met Office forecast powerful gusts, heavy showers, possible power cuts and widespread travel disruption. Rail operators advised passengers to avoid non-essential journeys on some routes.

Storm Boelo follows Storm Austen, which left thousands of properties without electricity in Ireland and Britain on Friday.
