The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the defending NBA champion New York Knicks 106-100 on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, giving LeBron James a victory in his debut with Philadelphia.
Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 28 points, while new Sixers addition Jaylen Brown recorded 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. James, beginning a record-extending 24th NBA season, had 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Joel Embiid added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Philadelphia regained the lead in the third quarter and held off several New York rallies. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 21 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The loss followed a pregame ceremony in which the Knicks received their championship rings and raised a banner commemorating last season’s title, their first in 53 years. Knicks fans chanted at James during the game, and he exchanged words with spectators near the court.
James said the newly assembled Sixers still needed time to develop despite the encouraging start. “It’s just one game, but obviously we can learn from the good things that we did,” he said. He also praised the team’s defense and said he was still finding his rhythm after spending only a little more than two weeks with the squad.
