U.S. and Mexican authorities continued searching Saturday for 11 people missing after a boat capsized in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico’s Baja California coast, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Sixteen Mexican nationals were rescued Friday after a mayday call was transmitted at about 1 a.m. Survivors told officials that 27 people had been aboard the vessel. A Coast Guard helicopter reached the scene roughly two hours after the call, and its crew, including a rescue swimmer, took about 90 minutes to pull the survivors from the water.
The boat sank about 140 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico, outside U.S. waters. The Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and Mexican Navy searched with helicopters, a fixed-wing aircraft and ships.
The Coast Guard said several survivors had severe injuries consistent with shark bites and received emergency treatment while being transported to San Diego. ABC News reported that three people were taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, including one with a suspected shark bite and two treated for cold exposure. Three others were evaluated at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and discharged.
Customs and Border Protection was investigating and interviewing survivors, the Coast Guard said.
