Israel imposed closures in and around Hebron and began a multi-day military operation in the occupied West Bank after two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers and lightly wounded three others on Friday.
The Israeli military said its forces killed the attackers, who were armed with an M16-style rifle and a handgun, following a gun battle at the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint. Hamas praised the attack but did not claim responsibility.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a closure of Hebron and preparations for what his office called a “full lockdown” across the West Bank. During a visit to Hebron, Netanyahu said troops would enter the area from which the attackers came, evacuate residents, search homes and destroy what Israel describes as militant infrastructure. He said authorities were considering extending the operation to other cities.
The military and Shin Bet security agency described the Hebron campaign as a targeted operation expected to last several days. They said forces were questioning suspects, searching dozens of locations and demolishing structures they considered security threats. The military said residents could leave Hebron through three designated points after screening.
By Saturday, roads into and out of Hebron were closed to vehicles, while the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that troops had forced dozens of residents from homes in some neighborhoods. The Israeli military did not respond to the Irish Times’ questions about those reported evacuations.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern about closures affecting Palestinian livelihoods and called for an end to violence on all sides. Israeli rights group B’Tselem warned that the measures could amount to collective punishment.
