More than 400,000 people demonstrated across France on Saturday over the cost of living, inequality and public services, with police using tear gas and water cannons during sporadic clashes in several cities.

The Interior Ministry estimated nationwide turnout at 410,000, including 110,000 in Paris, while the CGT trade union put the totals at 800,000 nationwide and 250,000 in the capital. Authorities said participation was lower than during the previous weekend, when demonstrations descended into widespread looting and some of France’s worst urban unrest in years.

Saturday’s protests were largely peaceful, but clashes erupted near the end of the Paris march at Porte de Vincennes after some demonstrators threw projectiles. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons. Confrontations or police interventions were also reported in Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Grenoble and several other cities.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said 64 people had been arrested in connection with the demonstration, including six minors. Most were suspected of weapons offences or involvement in a group preparing violence or property damage.

France deployed about 70,000 security personnel nationwide and restricted the Paris march to the southeastern edge of the capital. Museums including the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay closed, while retailers boarded up storefronts in anticipation of possible unrest. Organisers linked to the Yellow Vest movement called for another day of demonstrations on October 31.
