North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made a brief, unannounced visit to China on Saturday, crossing the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge into the border city of Dandong, according to South Korean government sources.
Kim met Wang Huning, a member of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee and chairman of China’s top political advisory body, Xinhua reported. The two visited an automobile factory and a Korean War memorial, where they paid tribute to Chinese troops killed in the 1950-53 conflict.
During talks, Kim thanked China for its long-standing support of North Korea and called for expanded friendship and practical cooperation between the neighboring countries, according to Xinhua. He returned to North Korea after the visit, with Wang seeing him off.
The trip came one day before the anniversary observed by Beijing and Pyongyang of Chinese forces entering the Korean War. It was Kim’s sixth visit to China and his first since September 2025.
The four-lane, 3,026-meter bridge links Dandong with the North Korean city of Sinuiju. Completed in 2014 with about $310 million in Chinese investment, it remained unused for more than a decade amid delays in finishing connecting roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side. The bridge officially opened on Oct. 15.
