A gunman firing from a car killed one person and wounded five others in Trappes and La Verrière, west of Paris, on Friday, in an attack French authorities are investigating as terrorism with a possible racist or anti-Muslim motive.
The shooting unfolded over about 15 minutes at several locations, including near a petrol station, a medical centre and a playground. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the attacker fired at people along his route in an apparent attempt to cause mass casualties. A 12-year-old girl who was shot eight times was among the wounded and was hospitalized in serious condition. Officials gave differing updates on the conditions of the other victims.
Police arrested a 39-year-old suspect, identified by the anti-terrorism prosecutor as Kevin T., in nearby Coignières. Authorities said a submachine gun and tear-gas grenades were found in his possession. The investigation covers murder linked to a terrorist enterprise and whether victims were targeted because of their real or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion.
President Emmanuel Macron visited Trappes and described the shooting as a “racist terrorist attack,” saying victims had been targeted because of their skin color and religion. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez also called it a terrorist crime.
The man killed was identified by his mixed martial arts academy as Pengo Bossio Wangi, a martial arts fighter.
