Iran has “substantially increased” efforts to target U.S. personnel, with lethal plots reaching “advanced stages” in the Middle East and some other countries, according to a declassified U.S. intelligence memo dated Friday.
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton sent the warning to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to reports citing a U.S. official. The memo said U.S. intelligence had identified heightened efforts by Iran to target American citizens and officials. Axios first reported the document.
The warning followed a State Department order for non-essential U.S. Embassy staff and their families to leave Saudi Arabia. A U.S. official said embassy staffing is continually reviewed in light of security conditions and that both threats of attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis and alleged Iranian plots against U.S. officials were influencing those decisions.
President Donald Trump on Friday also raised the possibility of renewed U.S. military action against Iran, saying the United States “may do another little Epic Fury,” but he provided no timing or further details.
