Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Monday, with talks covering the regional conflict and closer economic and diplomatic cooperation.
Pezeshkian urged faster implementation of bilateral agreements in energy, transportation, trade and infrastructure, according to the Iranian presidency. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the two sides discussed joint transport, logistics and energy projects, as well as coordination on the Middle East, Persian Gulf, South Caucasus and Caspian Sea.
Araghchi said Tuesday that the ministers also discussed Lebanon, Palestine, Ukraine and Yemen, along with expanded economic and nuclear cooperation. “Never in our history have Iran and Russia worked as closely as now,” he wrote on X.
Lavrov said before the visit that Moscow’s efforts were intended to prevent a return to large-scale war. Russia has offered to help mediate as talks between Iran and the United States remain stalled. During the meetings, he reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to assist and briefed Iranian officials on discussions held Sunday in Bahrain with Gulf countries.
Russia and Iran signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in January 2025 covering areas including energy, trade and security. The agreement does not include a mutual-defense commitment. Lavrov also said Russian specialists who left Iran’s damaged Bushehr nuclear power plant would gradually return.
