Israeli forces entered Hebron in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, displacing about 250 families and demolishing buildings after two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint a day earlier.
Residents said soldiers ordered them over loudspeakers to leave their homes, in some cases during the night. The Palestinian Authority said more than 1,500 people had been forced out, while France 24 cited a Hebron official who put the number at about 1,200 and said another 1,300 could face displacement.
The Israeli military said the gunmen, armed with a rifle and handgun, opened fire at the checkpoint near Hebron, killing two soldiers and wounding three Israelis before being shot dead. It said ammunition found in their vehicle indicated they had intended a larger attack nearby. Hamas did not claim responsibility but praised the shooting and called for more attacks.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to prepare for a full closure of the West Bank and said Israel was considering an operation there on a scale not undertaken since the 1967 war. He said an initial phase would include evacuating residents, searching homes and destroying what he called terrorist infrastructure. The military said it had begun raids and arrests in the Hebron area.
The Palestinian Authority urged international pressure to halt forced displacement and destruction. The operation began days before Israel’s general election, scheduled for Tuesday.
