Saudi Arabia postpones ‘Davos in the Desert’ conference until 2027

Saudi Arabia has postponed its flagship Future Investment Initiative conference until 2027 after a series of deadly Houthi attacks on the kingdom. The event, informally known as “Davos in the Desert,” had been scheduled for October 26-29 in Riyadh. Organizers said a new date would be announced “very soon.”
The FII Institute did not directly cite the attacks in its announcement. Chief executive Maha Bint Mishari Al Saud said the decision reflected a commitment to partners, speakers and delegates, adding that organizers wanted the conference’s 10th edition to deliver its expected scale and quality.
The state-backed annual gathering promotes Saudi investment plans and its effort to diversify the economy beyond hydrocarbons. Scheduled speakers included senior executives from major financial and technology companies, among them Goldman Sachs chairman and CEO David Solomon. Alphabet president Ruth Porat and BlackRock chairman and CEO Laurence Fink were also listed by the FII website, according to Al Jazeera.
The postponement follows repeated missile and drone strikes by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis on military, energy and civilian sites in Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh’s international airport. Al Jazeera reported that the attacks have killed at least 18 people and injured hundreds. Government agencies and some companies in Riyadh have also instructed employees to work remotely amid the continuing attacks.
