Organizers of the “No Kings” movement held more than 2,500 events across all 50 states and the District of Columbia on Saturday, shifting the campaign’s focus from large demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s administration to voter turnout ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

Under the banner “No Kings: Vote Early,” participants joined rallies, letter-writing campaigns and musical performances designed to encourage eligible voters to cast ballots before Election Day. Organizers described the effort as a nonpartisan voter-participation drive intended to help people understand their voting options and make plans to vote early.

Thousands attended a Seattle rally centered on the message that voting matters, while an event in Minneapolis also emphasized turnout. In Jackson Heights, Queens, volunteers affiliated with a local Indivisible chapter wrote letters urging voters in battleground states to vote as soon as possible.

More than 5 million ballots had already been cast nationwide, according to the University of Florida’s Election Lab, as early voting proceeded in dozens of states. Organizers said voting early could broaden participation and reduce pressure on poll workers on Election Day.

The elections will determine control of Congress. Deutsche Welle reported that opinion polls indicated Democrats were positioned to regain the House, while control of the Senate remained too close to call.
