Tsunami alerts were issued Saturday after separate offshore earthquakes near the Italian island of Sicily and the Pacific nation of Vanuatu.

Near Sicily, 12 earthquakes struck in quick succession in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, northwest of the Aeolian Islands, according to data cited by Joe.co.uk from Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. The strongest was reported at magnitude 5.5, following a magnitude 4.3 quake and 10 others of at least magnitude 3.

Italian authorities issued an orange, or advisory-level, tsunami alert, indicating the possibility of waves below 0.5 metres or a maximum run-up on land below one metre. Schools were evacuated in Palermo, as was a courthouse in Trapani. Residents left buildings on the Aeolian Islands, and a rock face reportedly collapsed on Filicudi. Sicily’s civil protection chief, Salvo Cocina, urged affected municipalities and emergency services to remain ready for further tremors.

Separately, The Indian Express reported that a strong earthquake struck near Vanuatu at 2:31 a.m. UTC. Its headline and article described the quake as magnitude 7.2, while a US Geological Survey post embedded in the report listed a preliminary magnitude of 6.3. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that dangerous waves could affect coasts within 300 kilometres of the epicentre. No deaths or damage had been reported.
