Israeli forces entered several neighborhoods in Hebron in the occupied West Bank and ordered hundreds of Palestinian families from their homes following a Friday shooting near the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others.
The Israeli military said the two suspected Palestinian attackers were killed in the gunfight. It described the subsequent action, conducted with the Shin Bet and Border Police, as a targeted operation to locate and dismantle “terrorist infrastructure” and weapons. The military said residents could leave through designated exits and that the operation was expected to last several days.
Residents told Middle East Eye that soldiers ordered families to leave at gunpoint, sometimes giving them only minutes to gather essential belongings. Evacuations were reported in al-Jalada, Ein Deir Bahha, Wadi al-Maghariba and Shi'b al-Milh. CNN and Middle East Eye also reported that demolitions had begun during the operation.
Estimates of the displacement varied. Hebron Governor Khaled Dudin said 150 families had been affected, while Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari and activist Issa Amro estimated about 250 families. France24 reported that a Palestinian official put the number of displaced people at about 1,200 and said another 1,300 could be ordered out.
The Palestinian Authority called for international pressure on Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was planning a broader operation, while the military characterized its current searches as precise and focused on the area linked to the gunmen.
