Brazilians voted Sunday in a closely contested presidential runoff between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula, 80, is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term, while Bolsonaro, 45, is campaigning on promises to cut public spending and take a tougher approach to crime. Lula has pledged to expand social protections and portrayed himself as a defender against foreign interference and democratic backsliding.
Final opinion polls showed the candidates virtually tied. Bolsonaro entered the runoff after finishing first in the October 4 opening round with about 47% of the vote, ahead of Lula’s 45%. Nearly 160 million Brazilians are eligible to vote, and parties have focused on mobilizing the roughly 33 million people who abstained in the first round.
The campaign was dominated by concerns about living costs, household debt, crime and corruption, along with accusations by Lula’s government of US interference, which Washington denies. Bolsonaro has also pledged to free his father, who is serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup following his 2022 election defeat.
An unofficial count compiled from polling-station reports in mainland China gave Lula 375 votes and Bolsonaro 134. The small overseas tally is not considered indicative of the national result.
Polling stations were due to close Sunday evening, with Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court expected to announce the winner within hours because votes are counted electronically.
