Brazilians voted Sunday in a closely contested presidential runoff between leftist incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
About 159 million people were eligible to vote. Bolsonaro entered the runoff after receiving 47.03% in the first round, compared with Lula’s 45.16%, a lead of more than 2.2 million votes. Recent surveys placed the candidates in a statistical tie or showed Bolsonaro narrowly ahead. More than 50% of valid votes is required to win.
Lula, 80, is seeking another term after serving from 2003 to 2010 and returning to office in 2023. His campaign has emphasized employment, poverty reduction and continued social programs. Bolsonaro, 45, has promoted tougher anti-crime policies and pledged to pardon his father, who is under house arrest over an attempted coup.
Older voters have been a focus for Lula. Brazilians over 60 now account for nearly a quarter of the electorate after their numbers grew 74% since 2010, according to government statistics agency IBGE. Bolsonaro, meanwhile, has gained support in some areas historically associated with Lula’s Workers’ Party, including districts in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone. Football star Neymar endorsed Bolsonaro on Friday.
Unofficial overseas counts showed Bolsonaro winning heavily among Brazilians voting in Japan, while Lula led in Australia and several other Asia-Pacific countries. Overseas voters comprise less than 1% of the electorate, and those early tallies were not indicative of the national result. Preliminary results were expected Sunday night.
