Hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated across France on Saturday against the high cost of living, inequality and conditions in the education system, with largely peaceful marches followed by clashes in Paris and several other cities.
The Interior Ministry estimated nationwide participation at about 410,000, while the organizing CGT union put the figure near 800,000. Estimates for the main Paris march ranged from 110,000 by police to 250,000 by unions.
Authorities deployed about 70,000 police officers and gendarmes after protests a week earlier descended into widespread rioting and looting. Several museums closed, businesses boarded up their storefronts and some urban areas were placed under curfew. The Paris demonstration was moved to the southeastern edge of the capital.
After the Paris march ended, police used tear gas, batons and water cannon during confrontations with protesters. Clashes were also reported in Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Montpellier, Nantes and other cities. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said several thousand radical activists had gathered at the rear of the Paris march, including about 500 people identified as rioters. He said shops and businesses were looted, but on a smaller scale than during the previous weekend’s unrest.
Nearly 1,000 people were arrested nationwide, according to Nuñez, who said the total was expected to rise. Authorities said weapons and projectiles had been confiscated during pre-demonstration checks.
