Hundreds of thousands of people marched across France on Saturday to protest the rising cost of living, a week after demonstrations descended into widespread rioting and looting.
Authorities deployed about 70,000 security personnel, with soldiers guarding sensitive sites and elite units, helicopters and armored vehicles also mobilized. Partial curfews and protest restrictions remained in several cities, while museums including the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay closed and many shops boarded up their windows.
The Interior Ministry estimated turnout at about 410,000 nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris, while the CGT union put the national figure at 800,000 and the Paris crowd at 250,000. The main Paris march, moved to the capital’s southeastern edge, was largely peaceful, but clashes broke out as crowds dispersed. Police used tear gas and batons, while confrontations were also reported in Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Montpellier, Nantes and other cities.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said nearly 1,000 people were arrested and two people were seriously injured. He blamed much of the violence on black-clad “ultra-left” groups. Despite the clashes, Nuñez said reinforced policing prevented a repeat of the large-scale shop looting and property damage seen on October 17, when hundreds of businesses and public buildings were attacked and about 2,700 people were arrested.
Labor unions have called for another major day of strikes and protests on November 5.
