Iran and members of the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement agreed on Monday to continue discussions following their first joint meeting in Tehran, Iranian state television reported.
Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani military chief Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin attended the talks, which focused on regional peace and security. Al Jazeera reported that the officials also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and were due to hold discussions with Iranian security officials.
The gathering took place amid escalating regional tensions, including missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis against Saudi Arabia and heightened rhetoric between Washington and Tehran. Saudi official Rayed Krimly said the visit was part of efforts by the pact’s members to de-escalate the crisis, promote diplomatic solutions and support mediation by Qatar and Pakistan.
According to the Daily Maverick, citing Saudi and Iranian officials, Pakistan initiated the meeting during Munir’s visit to Tehran the previous week. Qatari mediators also met Iranian officials in Tehran on Sunday as part of efforts to reduce tensions.
Ali Bagheri, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said before the meeting that Tehran supports a regional security framework led by countries in the region and opposed foreign interference. Iranian state television said participants agreed to keep discussing stronger cooperation on regional security, but announced no specific agreement beyond continuing the talks.
