Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan arrived in Tehran on Monday for regional security talks with Iranian leaders amid efforts to ease the continuing Middle East conflict.
The delegations included Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani army chief General Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin. They met an Iranian delegation led by Mohsen Rezaei of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, according to Iranian officials and Middle East Eye.
Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Rayed Krimly said the visit was part of de-escalation efforts by members of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. He said the talks were intended to promote dialogue and diplomatic solutions while supporting mediation by Qatar and Pakistan.
The meeting follows eight months of regional conflict that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February. An April ceasefire ended the initial heavy bombardment, but tensions have continued, including disputes over access to the Strait of Hormuz and fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. Diplomatic efforts have remained stalled since the collapse of a proposed settlement in June.
