Saudi-led forces reported intercepting a series of drones and missiles targeting the kingdom as hostilities with Yemen’s Houthi movement intensified.
On Wednesday, coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said six drones had been intercepted, including over Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province and the Madina region. The Saudi Energy Ministry said debris from an intercepted drone targeting the Shaybah oil field near the United Arab Emirates border killed a Filipino and a Nepali and injured two other people. The coalition did not identify who launched the drones, and Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree denied that the group had conducted “deep” operations inside Saudi territory.
Other reported interceptions involved missiles aimed at Riyadh and southern Saudi Arabia. The coalition said Sunday that it destroyed 10 ballistic missiles targeting the south, along with a cruise missile aimed at Khamis Mushait and additional missiles and drones directed toward Riyadh. Debris from intercepted projectiles was also reported in Khamis Mushait and the areas of Makkah, Madina, Jeddah and Taif.
The Houthis separately claimed attacks on military sites in Yemen, including Badr camp in Aden and a coalition base at Al Rayyan airport in Mukalla. They also said they had targeted Saudi airports and oil infrastructure, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The Saudi-led coalition later said it destroyed two ballistic-missile launchers in Sanaa, including one allegedly used to fire toward Riyadh.
