Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won re-election as Brazil’s president on Sunday, defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a runoff and securing a fourth non-consecutive term.
Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court reported that Lula received about 51.8% of valid votes, compared with 48.2% for Bolsonaro, a margin of roughly 4.4 million ballots. The result reversed the first round on October 4, when Bolsonaro led Lula by about 2.2 million votes. Lula became the first Brazilian presidential candidate since the country’s return to democracy to win a runoff after placing second in the opening round.
Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would seek to annul the election, objecting to a Supreme Court decision that extended voting by two hours. Both campaigns had requested extensions in response to transport disruptions or severe weather, according to Al Jazeera. Political analyst Vinicius G. Rodrigues Vieira told the outlet that Bolsonaro’s legal case appeared weak.
Supporters celebrated in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as leaders across the Americas, Europe and Asia congratulated Lula. In his victory remarks, Lula said a president must govern for everyone, regardless of whether every voter supports him.
Brazil-linked assets fell sharply on Monday. CNBC reported steep declines in a Brazil-focused exchange-traded fund and in U.S.-traded shares of major Brazilian banks and companies.
