Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won re-election to a fourth non-consecutive term on Sunday, defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff.
With virtually all ballots counted, Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court said Lula received about 51.8% of valid votes, compared with roughly 48.2% for Bolsonaro. Lula had trailed Bolsonaro in the first round, making him the first runner-up to win a presidential runoff since Brazil adopted its current two-round system in 1989.
Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would ask the electoral court to annul the election. He objected to a Supreme Court decision that kept polling stations open for an additional two hours following reports that heavy rain, transportation disruptions and technical problems had prevented some voters from reaching polling places.
Bolsonaro accused Lula of abusing his power and criticized Justice Cristiano Zanin, a Lula appointee and former attorney for the president, for changing voting rules on election day. Reports said both campaigns had sought extensions in affected areas, although for different reasons.
Electoral court president Kassio Nunes Marques said the extension delayed vote counting but did not alter the result. Lula is scheduled to begin the new term on January 5, 2027. Addressing supporters after his victory, he pledged to dedicate himself to delivering his best presidential term.
