Cyclone Arnab moved closer to India’s east coast on Tuesday after intensifying into a very severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The storm is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh-Yanam coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on Wednesday morning, near Yanam. The IMD forecast sustained winds of 115-125 km/h, with gusts reaching 140 km/h, as Arnab weakens to a severe cyclonic storm around landfall.
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are preparing evacuations from vulnerable and low-lying areas. An Andhra Pradesh disaster management official told Reuters that the state had identified 570,000 vulnerable people and planned to begin evacuations Monday evening. Boats were ordered back to shore, while Odisha closed schools and colleges in five districts for two days.
Heavy to extremely heavy rain, rough seas and a storm surge of one to two metres above the astronomical tide are forecast along parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, with low-lying areas at risk of inundation. Rain began in northern Andhra Pradesh overnight Monday, including widespread showers in Srikakulam district.
Weather alerts also cover parts of Odisha and Telangana, where four districts face an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain. High waves struck coastal roads and settlements in north Chennai and Tiruvallur on Tuesday evening, prompting closure of the Ennore Expressway and traffic diversions. Officials said seas there were expected to calm by Wednesday noon.
