Very severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab moved toward India’s eastern coast on Tuesday, bringing rain to southern Odisha as Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states prepared for landfall.
The India Meteorological Department forecast that Arnab would cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Yanam, by Wednesday forenoon. The agency expected maximum sustained winds of 115-125 kmph, gusting to 140 kmph, though AFP reported a later forecast of gusts up to 150 kmph. The IMD issued a red alert for Andhra Pradesh and warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of southern Odisha.
Authorities ordered or planned evacuations for about 50,000 people in Andhra Pradesh and 48,000 in Odisha, according to media reports cited by AFP. Odisha opened 1,735 cyclone shelters. In Visakhapatnam district, officials identified 10,176 households across 37 villages as vulnerable and prepared 54 relief camps with capacity for 31,405 people.
Andhra Pradesh and Odisha closed schools in affected areas, prohibited sea fishing and placed rescue teams on standby. The National Disaster Response Force deployed teams and held additional personnel in reserve. Several train services and flights were cancelled, while officials activated control rooms and prepared medical, power-restoration and emergency-response teams.
Heavy rain and rough seas were reported in Kakinada, where police blocked roads leading to the coast. Odisha also restricted movement in landslide-prone areas, while Sri Lanka and Nepal issued warnings for flooding, mudslides, heavy snowfall and avalanches linked to the storm.
