Kozhikode City Cyber Crime police have arrested two men from Kannur in connection with an alleged “digital arrest” fraud in which a Kozhikode woman lost ₹1.35 crore.
Police identified the suspects as T.M. Mohammed Hanan, 23, of Kathiroor, and T. Mohammed Shahzad, 21, of Koothuparamba. They allegedly posed as Mumbai Crime Branch officers and contacted the woman through WhatsApp voice and video calls.
According to police, the callers claimed that a SIM card obtained using the woman’s Aadhaar details had been used in financial fraud. They then persuaded her to transfer money from her bank accounts for purported verification by the Reserve Bank of India, promising that it would be returned with interest.
The woman transferred a total of ₹1,35,14,000 in 13 transactions from three bank accounts. Investigators found that ₹5 lakh was credited to an account belonging to one of the accused, police said. The money was later withdrawn through cheques and ATMs and transferred to other accounts.
A local court remanded both men in judicial custody. Police said they were working to identify other suspects, trace the wider network of accounts used to move the money and recover the stolen funds.
