Cyclone Arnab crossed India’s Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday morning with winds of 125-135 km/h and gusts reaching 150 km/h, the India Meteorological Department said. The landfall, completed between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. about 20 km east-northeast of Narsapur, weakened Arnab from a very severe to a severe cyclonic storm.
Andhra Pradesh recorded five deaths, according to The Hindu. Earlier reports from the Godavari region said fallen trees blocked roads and damaged banana and coconut plantations, while several boats were washed into a creek near Kakinada. Some thatched homes in Uppada reportedly collapsed, but their occupants had moved to relief camps. Police rescued four workers stranded overnight in a flooded warehouse at Kakinada Anchorage Port.
The state converted 609 school campuses into relief shelters, closed schools across 16 coastal districts and mobilised more than 17,000 volunteers. Disaster-response teams began clearing fallen trees and restoring access after winds subsided.
Heavy rain also struck northern Andhra Pradesh. Twelve weather stations in Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts recorded more than 200 mm between Tuesday morning and early Wednesday, including 231.5 mm at Kannuripalem.
At least 17 districts in southern Odisha were affected by heavy rainfall. Arnab’s remnants also brought rain to Telangana and Jharkhand, where alerts remained in effect Thursday. The IMD forecast the system would weaken into a depression on October 29.
