Cyclone Arnab killed at least three people and damaged homes, crops and infrastructure after making landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday as a very severe cyclonic storm, officials said.
The India Meteorological Department said the cyclone crossed the coast with sustained winds of 125-135 km/h and gusts of up to 150 km/h before weakening into a deep depression. More than 180,000 people were evacuated across Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha ahead of landfall, according to later reports. Operations at three Andhra Pradesh airports were suspended, while some schools closed and train and flight services were cancelled.
Officials said at least 180 houses were destroyed, 220 trees were brought down and power supplies were disrupted in Andhra Pradesh. Torrential rain continued to cause severe flooding in Odisha on Thursday, affecting more than 200 villages across Ganjam and Gajapati districts. In Ganjam, 42,500 people were marooned and 11,000 moved to shelters. Floodwaters washed away roads, triggered landslides and left three rivers in spate. The Coast Guard said it airlifted six people from an inundated health centre.
Arnab’s remnants also prompted warnings in Nepal, where authorities identified major highways at risk from landslides, rockfalls, flooding and erosion. Nepal suspended the issuance of trekking permits for high mountain areas for three days and advised against unnecessary highway travel during rainfall.
