Jeju police have publicly identified a 61-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his former partner after allegedly stalking and threatening her following their breakup.
The Jeju Provincial Police Agency posted the name and photograph of Kang Seong-eun on its website Thursday, with the disclosure to remain online through Nov. 30. Kang was referred to prosecutors in detention this week on charges including retaliatory murder, aggravated attempted abduction and confinement, aggravated trespassing, and preparing to commit arson at an occupied building.
Police accuse Kang of attacking the woman, who was in her 40s, at about 1:38 a.m. on Oct. 12 as she returned to her home in Yeon-dong, Jeju City. Investigators believe he tried to force her toward his vehicle and stabbed her to death. They said he had allegedly entered her residence carrying an incendiary substance and had placed a weapon and paint thinner near a staircase before waiting for her.
Authorities applied the retaliatory murder charge after concluding that the alleged attack was connected to the woman ending their relationship and to financial disputes. Investigators also found that Kang had repeatedly sought meetings with her and allegedly threatened in March to distribute recordings of their sexual activity. She reported those threats, but the case was closed after she did not attend questioning or cooperate further. Police reopened that inquiry after the killing and added suspected stalking and sexual-violence-law violations.
