Hundreds of residents evacuated from Russian-occupied Oleshky crossed into Ukrainian-held territory on Saturday after travelling through Russia and Belarus during a localized ceasefire.
Four planes carrying evacuees landed in Gomel, Belarus, where rescue workers, medical teams and Red Cross volunteers received them before buses took them toward the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian official David Arakhamia said all evacuees and the accompanying Ukrainian delegation were expected to reach Ukrainian territory within hours. France 24 and The Hill later reported that the group had crossed into Ukraine and begun reuniting with relatives.
Residents left Oleshky on Friday in a convoy of 25 buses, with ambulances provided for people with limited mobility. The convoy first travelled through Russian-held territory to Anapa in southern Russia before flying to Belarus. Residents were offered a choice of moving to Ukrainian- or Russian-held territory or remaining in Oleshky with humanitarian supplies.
The evacuation took place under a rare ceasefire attributed by several outlets to efforts by U.S. first lady Melania Trump. Pope Leo XIV also pressed Russian and Ukrainian leaders to permit aid deliveries and civilian evacuations. Oleshky, occupied by Russia since 2022, has endured extensive destruction and shortages of food, medicine, electricity, gas and running water. Aid was prepared for residents who chose to remain.
