Residents evacuated from Russian-occupied Oleshky reached Ukrainian-controlled territory on Saturday after a 19-hour journey through Russia and Belarus under a temporary local ceasefire.

The evacuees travelled by bus from Oleshky through Crimea to the Russian city of Anapa, then flew to Gomel in Belarus before continuing by bus to the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian negotiator Davyd Arakhamiia said four aircraft carried the group to Belarus. Ukrainian officials have not disclosed the final number evacuated to Ukrainian-held territory, citing security concerns.

Relatives, medical workers, aid organizations and police met the residents at the border. Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, said the oldest evacuee was 94 and the youngest had recently turned one. Some Oleshky residents instead travelled toward Russian-held areas, while others remained in the city.

The operation followed a localized ceasefire coordinated by Ukrainian and Russian humanitarian officials and mediated with the involvement of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo. Officials from both sides said the pause, which began Tuesday and was scheduled to last through late Sunday, had held without reported violations. It enabled road demining, deliveries of food and medicine, and civilian evacuations.

Oleshky, occupied by Russia since 2022, has suffered disrupted supply routes, power and water shortages. Ukrainian officials estimated that about 1,700 to 2,000 people remained there before the evacuation, compared with a prewar population of roughly 24,000.
