Jigawa State police have arrested a 29-year-old barber accused of fatally stabbing a man during an argument in Dutse, the state capital.
Police spokesperson SP Shi’isu Adam said Emmanuel Olatonok was arrested on suspicion of culpable homicide after Ibrahim Shago, 32, was stabbed in the neck at about 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 29. The incident occurred in the Rafin Sanyi area of Dutse Local Government Area, where Olatonok worked as a barber at Moonlight Hotel.
According to police, Olatonok was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the argument and stabbing occurred. Shago, a resident of Karnaya town, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead by a doctor.
Adam said youths gathered after the incident and attempted to vandalize the hotel, but officers from the Dutse Division intervened and prevented further escalation and property damage.
The suspect remains in police custody while an investigation continues and will be charged in court after it is completed, Adam said. Jigawa State Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala urged residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands and report grievances to the appropriate authorities.
