Hundreds of thousands of people marched across France on Saturday in a third consecutive weekend of protests over rising living costs, school conditions and public services. The Interior Ministry estimated nationwide turnout at 320,000, including 70,000 in Paris, while organizers said nearly 500,000 participated.
Authorities said the declared marches were largely orderly, but clashes broke out near their end in Paris, Lyon and other cities. In Paris, masked people tore up paving stones and threw them at police, while officers used tear gas and baton charges. Projectiles and incendiary devices were also thrown at security forces, and police used water cannon against an unauthorized protest in Toulouse.
The Interior Ministry said late Saturday that 565 people had been arrested nationwide, an increase from an earlier count of more than 290. Four police officers and one gendarme were injured in Paris, including three officers burned by Molotov cocktails. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described one firebomb attack on an officer as attempted murder and blamed far-left extremist groups for some of the violence.
About 70,000 police and gendarmes were deployed after Nunez warned of a “very high risk” of disorder. Protest routes were moved away from some city centers, restrictions and curfews were imposed in several areas, and shops boarded their windows following rioting and looting during demonstrations on October 17.
