About 320,000 people joined demonstrations across France on Saturday, according to the Interior Ministry, in a third consecutive weekend of protests over living costs, strained public services and President Emmanuel Macron’s government. The ministry said 70,000 people marched in Paris, while national turnout fell from an estimated 410,000 the previous weekend.
Most of roughly 150 demonstrations remained peaceful, but clashes broke out as rallies ended in Paris, Lyon, Toulouse and Marseille. Police used tear gas, stun grenades and, in Toulouse, a water cannon to disperse crowds. In Paris, masked people threw paving stones and at least one incendiary device at officers, while police responded with tear gas and baton charges. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said an officer struck by a Molotov cocktail was the victim of an “attempted murder.” Police made 511 arrests, The Guardian reported.
Authorities deployed 70,000 police and gendarmes after riots and looting during protests on October 17 damaged shops, businesses and public buildings. Halloween costumes and masks added to concerns that participants seeking violence could conceal their identities. A court upheld restrictions that moved the Paris march away from central shopping districts.
The demonstrations brought together students seeking better school conditions, trade unions and Yellow Vest protesters. Youth-led rallies also took place in several German cities, where demonstrators similarly called for improved education and lower living costs.
