Hundreds of civilians evacuated from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky arrived in northern Ukraine via Belarus on Saturday after a localized humanitarian ceasefire enabled their departure.
The pause in fighting, which began Tuesday, was brokered through mediation involving U.S. first lady Melania Trump, with Al Jazeera also reporting assistance from Pope Leo XIV. A convoy of 25 buses was organized for as many as 750 people, alongside ambulances for residents with limited mobility.
Evacuees traveled from Oleshky through Russian-occupied territory and southern Russia before flying to Belarus and crossing into Ukraine’s Chernihiv region. Many reunited with relatives they had not seen for years, while elderly and weakened residents received food, medical care and other assistance.
Residents described severe shortages after fighting and drone activity disrupted supply routes. Some told the BBC and Reuters that they had crossed minefields in search of food or survived by cooking grass and garden weeds. One man told Reuters he had lost 20 kilograms over the past year and needed hospital treatment.
Oleshky was seized by Russian forces during the opening days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The BBC reported that an estimated 1,700 people remained in the city before the evacuation, with up to 6,000 in Oleshky and surrounding areas. Some residents chose to stay despite shortages of gas, electricity and running water.
