Residents evacuated from Russian-occupied Oleshky arrived in Ukrainian-controlled territory on Saturday after a 19-hour journey through Russia and Belarus under a temporary humanitarian ceasefire.
The operation began Friday, when residents were given a limited window to leave the frontline city in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region. Evacuees travelled by bus through Crimea to Anapa in Russia, then flew to Gomel, Belarus, before continuing by bus to the Ukrainian border. Relatives, health workers and aid organizations met them on arrival.
Ukrainian officials have not disclosed the number brought to Ukrainian-held territory, citing security concerns. U.S. First Lady Melania Trump said Friday that the convoy could evacuate more than 750 people. Residents were offered the option of travelling to Ukrainian- or Russian-controlled territory or remaining in Oleshky, where food and medical supplies were delivered during the pause.
The localized ceasefire began Tuesday and was due to last through Sunday evening. Ukrainian and Russian officials said it had held without violations, allowing roads to be cleared of mines and humanitarian supplies to enter the city. The White House and officials from both countries credited Trump with helping broker the agreement, while Pope Leo XIV was also involved in efforts to secure aid deliveries and evacuations.
About 1,700 to 2,000 people were estimated to remain in Oleshky, down from a prewar population of roughly 24,000. Residents described severe shortages of food, water and electricity, as well as persistent danger from drones and mines.
