Cyclone Arnab killed at least three people and damaged homes, crops and infrastructure after striking India’s southeastern coast as a very severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday.
The India Meteorological Department said the cyclone made landfall in Andhra Pradesh with sustained winds of 125-135 km/h and gusts reaching 150 km/h. Rainfall reached as much as 30 centimetres in parts of Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha before the storm weakened into a deep depression later Wednesday.
A National Disaster Response Force official said Andhra Pradesh was the worst-affected state. At least 180 houses were destroyed, 220 trees fell and electricity was disrupted in several areas, according to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. State officials told Reuters that two of the deaths resulted from a falling tree and electrocution. State authorities also reported that roughly 200,000 acres of cropland were inundated.
More than 180,000 people were evacuated across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha before landfall. Flights and trains were disrupted, operations at three Andhra Pradesh airports were suspended, and schools in some areas closed. By Friday, electricity had been restored in 4,771 of 5,400 affected villages served by one regional utility, while Naidu ordered faster repairs to roads, power and mobile networks.
The storm’s remnants brought rain and snowfall to Nepal after weakening into a low-pressure system. Nepal temporarily suspended trekking permits for high mountain areas, while forecasters expected the weather effects there to ease from Saturday afternoon.
