Andhra Pradesh is preparing for another cyclone less than a week after Cyclone Arnab killed seven people, damaged homes and infrastructure, and disrupted transport across eastern India.
Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts as a very severe cyclonic storm, bringing sustained winds of 125-135 km/h and rainfall exceeding 200 mm in some areas. Officials attributed the deaths to falling trees, electrocution, wall collapses and other storm-related incidents. More than 180,000 people were evacuated in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, while flights were disrupted and at least 64 trains were cancelled.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu estimated the state’s losses at ₹4,600 crore after surveying affected areas. He said about 8,000 electricity poles were uprooted in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district alone. A central government team was due to assess damage in Konaseema and West Godavari districts.
Arnab subsequently weakened into a depression over southern Chhattisgarh and adjoining Odisha. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department said a new system over the Bay of Bengal was expected to become a cyclonic storm named Murasu and reach the Andhra Pradesh coast on November 2. It forecast landfall between Nellore and Narsapur early on November 3 as a severe cyclonic storm, with winds of 100-110 km/h and gusts up to 120 km/h. Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was forecast for Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on November 2 and 3.
