Netanyahu’s bloc leads Israeli election but falls short of majority

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc won the most seats in Israel’s general election but fell short of a parliamentary majority, according to final results released Friday by the Central Elections Committee.

Netanyahu’s coalition secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, including 27 for Likud, which remained the largest individual party. The opposition bloc led by centrist former military chief Gadi Eisenkot won 48 seats. A governing coalition requires at least 61.

The Arab-led Joint List and Ra’am parties won a combined 19 seats, their strongest showing to date, potentially giving them a central role in coalition negotiations. However, most Jewish parties pledged during the campaign not to work with Arab-led parties. If no coalition can be formed, Israel could face another election.

The final count followed unproven allegations from Likud that Arab political groups received foreign funding to influence the vote. Ra’am and the Joint List denied wrongdoing, as did Qatar, which was accused of involvement. The election committee said suggestions of widespread irregularities were groundless. Israel’s Shin Bet security agency said it was investigating suspected irregularities but cautioned that the inquiry was not intended to cast blame on Arab voters generally.

President Isaac Herzog is expected to consult the elected factions and ask the politician he believes has the best chance of assembling a government to begin coalition talks. The process could take several weeks.
