Yemen’s internationally recognized government launched a Saudi-backed offensive this week to retake Houthi-held territory, reporting advances near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and across several inland fronts.
Government-aligned forces said they recaptured Dhubab and nearby coastal areas on Monday, while CNBC reported a government claim that the strategic port of Mokha had also fallen. The Houthis denied losing ground, and Reuters and CNBC said they could not independently verify the full extent of the gains.
Fighting continued Tuesday near Bab el-Mandeb, Taiz and Marib. Government forces announced an operation to seize Al-Wazi’iyah district in Taiz province and claimed advances on strategic hills and mountain positions. A military spokesperson separately claimed 1,122 attacks had killed about 1,747 Houthi fighters and disabled or destroyed 364 vehicles and other units. Those casualty and damage figures were not independently confirmed.
The Saudi-led coalition said 100 fighter jets were supporting the campaign and that hundreds of Houthi targets had been destroyed. The offensive followed Houthi advances that cut a key road between Taiz and Aden and expanded the group’s control along the Red Sea coast.
Reuters verified videos posted by government forces showing armored vehicles running over Houthi fighters, including people who appeared unarmed and had their hands raised. The Houthis called the footage evidence of war crimes. The Saudi-led coalition and two government-aligned formations did not immediately comment directly on the videos.
The Houthis also claimed missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports and energy infrastructure. Saudi authorities reported three injuries and limited damage at airports in Jazan and Najran. Two Houthi missiles later targeted Aden’s airport early Wednesday, with no casualties reported.
