Three people were killed and 36 wounded in attacks on two Saudi Arabian airports over two days, the kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said Wednesday. Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the strikes.
Two women, one Moroccan and one Algerian, were killed at Abha International Airport, where 28 people suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious, according to the authority. A Sudanese man was killed at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, and eight people were wounded, including five Saudis, two Egyptians and one Pakistani. The attacks also caused material damage, and the injured were taken to hospitals.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group attacked King Khalid airport with ballistic missiles and targeted Abha with missiles and drones. Saudi civil aviation officials did not identify those responsible in their statement.
The Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed the ballistic-missile launch platform used in the Riyadh attack and later announced strikes on more than 80 Houthi military sites in Yemen. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki said attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure would not go unpunished.
The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh urged Americans to exercise heightened vigilance because of threats to airports and airspace. The United Arab Emirates, India and France condemned the attacks and expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
